Customs and culture in the Salzburg region
This season will be as a whole Salzburg country and in the Mozart city of Salzburg In addition to the traditional Christmas markets, there are also numerous customs and festivals celebrated.
Advent is the time of CRAMPUS RUNS – the traditional custom is a spectacle for the whole family. “Krampus” is the name for the wild and shaggy companion of Saint Nicholas. They usually occur in larger groups (passing). The time of the Krampus is December 5th and the days immediately before.
On December 6th, Santa Claus comes to the guests at the Hotel Post with a Krampus pass. He has filled his jute sack with apples, nuts and sweets for the “good ones”, and for the “bad ones” there is the rod from Krampus! After Advent songs and poems, Santa Claus reads from his Golden Book and distributes his small gifts to our guests.
CHRISTMAS IN ABTENAU is a family celebration, so there are no big events in Lammertal.

The evening before, we get in the mood for the upcoming Christmas Eve together with Abtenau musicians with Advent music and contemplative songs.
December 24th is a long day, especially for children. The time can be shortened with a winter walk, a visit to a nativity scene exhibition, a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride and there is a children's church service in the afternoon.
According to an old custom, the family goes “smoking” - the incense is lit in the “smoke pan”, we go through the whole house and ask God's blessing.
Our hotel guests enjoy Christmas Eve in a contemplative setting with a special Christmas gala menu in front of the lovingly decorated Christmas tree.
In addition to fragrant, home-baked cookies, the Christ Child brings everyone a small Christmas present, bells ring and tower brass announce the celebratory Christmas mass around midnight.
NEW YEAR'S EVE IN ABTENAU - the "special time" of the year, which begins so contemplatively with Advent, ends on New Year's Eve with exuberant joy of life. After Christmas, the New Year is welcomed with rockets and fireworks!
New Year's Eve celebrations at the Hotel Post - after the champagne reception and New Year's Eve menu, we celebrate the traditional Hotel-Post New Year's Eve ball with live music, the big fireworks display at the turn of the year starts right in front of the hotel at midnight, with "Danube Waltz" and "Glücksschweindl-Essen" we head into the place full of enthusiasm New year.
Hangover hike on New Year's Day - we start with a 1,5 hour guided hike through Abtenau. The hike ends with a joint entry of the Strubberg riflemen, hunting horn players, Schuhplattler and the Grieskoglerschnalzer onto the market square. After the mayor's New Year's address, rifle honor volleys, brass bands, Schnalzer and Schuhplattler with mulled wine and punch ensure a varied supporting program. A wonderful start to the new year.
The PEARL RUN IN ABTENAU takes place every year at the beginning of January - in the rough nights before Epiphany (January 6th).
“Perchten” are frightening figures that are widespread in the Alpine regions. The bells or other noise instruments carried along are intended to drive out winter.
The numerous Perchten put on an exciting show and present themselves in wonderfully horrific masks.

The traditional ones GLÖCKLER RUNS take place every year on January 5th in the Salzkammergut region. These are “passengers” of men dressed in white who parade through the town with magnificently designed structures on their heads. With their colorful, bright caps and white clothing, they bring “light” into the dark winter night and wish you luck for the New Year.
The most famous Glöcklerlauf with probably the most beautiful and artistic Glöckler caps Ebensee held.
THE ST. THREE KINGS - STAR SINGERS – The “Three Kings” travel through the country until January 6th. In this old Austrian custom, boys and girls go from house to house as star singers, bringing people the Christmas message of the birth of Jesus and wishes for peace and blessings for the New Year.
The house blessing “C + M + B” (Christus Mansionem Benedicat – Christ bless the house) is written with chalk on every front door.
The Abtenauers King rider They move through the town on horseback, singing and playing music. The conclusion then takes place on the market square with the traditional Perchtenlauf with a parade to the nativity scene.
Bischofshofen is the venue for the annual finals of the INTERNATIONAL FOUR CHANCES TOUR on January 06th. The Paul Ausserleitner ski jump is the fourth and final stop on the international Four Hills Tournament. The tournament victory is usually the deciding factor here. Up to 25.000 enthusiastic spectators experience this special sporting event.
