winter hiking trails
The hilly mountain world also offers easy routes; we will be happy to give you tips on the various routes at reception walking routes.
Here are a few “samples”.
Around the Egelsee: Walking time approx. 1,5 hours
Starting point: swimming pool
Following the sign “Egelsee” you come to “Oberegelseebauern” and further along the edge of the forest directly to the quiet, often snow-covered moorland landscape at Egelsee. Past the “Obereggbauern” and the apartment blocks, you turn right on a narrow sidewalk straight back into the town. The short detour through the Wimmwald, which also leads down to Abtenau, is also attractive.
Note: In the Egelsee, Fischbach and Au areas, some of the cross-country ski trails have a hiking trail. This means you can enjoy the untouched winter landscape parallel to the cross-country skiers.

Fliehof – Sonnleiten: Walking time: approx. 2 hours
Starting point: market square
Towards the swimming pool – up to the Wimmwald settlement and further to the “Fliehofbauer” schnapps distillery. From there a walkway leads through the forest to the “Sonnleitenalm” (with a wonderful view of the Abtenau Basin). The direct route or a small detour via the “Poschenhof” leads down to the town.

Matzhofötzl – Fischbach riding: Walking time: approx. 1,5 hours
Starting point: East parking lot
Along the Fischbach upstream through the Matzhofötzl - in the Fischbach district you cross the main road and continue along the Fischbach, later taking the right side road towards Abtenau and coming back to the town via Fischbachreit

Au – circular hike: Walking time: approx. 1,5 hours
Starting point: Hotel Post
You go towards “Au” and after crossing the cross-country ski trails, turn right towards Voglau. Now you walk on a narrow road - the Arlstein on the left, the Schwarzenbach on the right - until after 500m it turns right, crosses the stream and leads back to Abtenau on a partially uphill road.
This hike can be extended in two ways:
Variant 1: Around the Arlstein
As described at the beginning, head towards Au, continue to the “Aumühle” and “Unterbergbauern” inns. You turn right and finally follow the sign “Abtenau”
Variant 2: Au – Flichtlhof
From the Hotel “Post” into the Au, then towards Voglau as already described above. Now you continue hiking to the “Flichtlhof” and only cross the Schwarzenbach at the next bridge. Walk past a gravel pit up to the main road or, if it is not snowy, use a forest path that leads off to the right back to the starting point

Voglau – Rossbühel. Walking time: 2,5 – 3 hours
Starting point: Hotel Post
Down into the Au district and turn right towards “Voglau”. The road first leads past a few farms and then narrows to a path that always leads along the Schwarzenbach. This hike is very attractive in cold winter weather because the trees and bushes are covered in hoarfrost. You cross the main road and walk past the “Lammerrain” along the path through snow-covered winter forest and meadows back to Abtenau. From Voglau you also have the option of taking the free hiking bus home.

Fischbach-Karkogel: Walking time approx. 3-4 hours
Along the Fischbach to Gasthof Fischbachstube and right along the goods path through the snow-covered winter forest up to the Karkogelhütte, where a fantastic panoramic view of Abtenau awaits you. Return the same way or comfortably take the gondola down to the valley.

Radochsberg circular route: walking time approx. 3 hours
From the Schwaighofbrücke stop, the initially somewhat steep, but later comfortable path begins around the Radochsberg with a wonderful view of the Tennengebirge, the Osterhorn group and the Dachstein massif. You can return comfortably with the free hiking bus or hike the path towards Schiemhof – Abtenau (another approx. 1,5 hours)

Sittler-Alm in St. Martin: Walking time approx. 3-4 hours
Nasenweg junction - a slightly ascending path through snow-covered winter forest to the idyllic Sittleralm. Return the same way or go for a fun toboggan ride down into the valley.

Höllalm in St. Martin: Walking time approx. 2,5 hours
In the town center, a goods path branches off to the left and leads you up to the rustic Höllalm, where a hearty snack and a wonderful panorama await you. This can be combined with a detour to “Halmgut”.

Wildau im Lammertal: Walking time approx. 1,5 hours
From the Gasthof Lungötzerhof you hike past the fish ponds into the idyllic Lammertal and turn right, up a slightly ascending path to the Gasthof Wildau. From the sun terrace you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Tennengebirge, the Gosaukamm with the striking Bischofsmütze. (The hiking bus also goes directly into the valley).
Further hiking options: along the Aualmloipe or the partially cleared forest path into the rear Lammertal towards Aualm - framed by the almost 2000 meter high rock faces of the Tennengebirge. Or the idyllic winter hiking trail (horse-drawn sleigh trail) from Lungötz to St. Martin.

“Winterstellgut” mountain inn in Annaberg: approx. 2,5 hours
Through the Rauenbachtal towards Astauwinkel and on a slight slope up the road to the left to the newly built Winterstellgut. Once you reach the top you will find a very beautiful view of the Gosaukamm and the Tennengebirge

Mountain station – Hornbahn – Edtalm in Russbach: approx. 3 hours
High-altitude hiking trail – starting point: valley station of the Rußbacher Hornbahn.
You go up with the 8-seater cable car. Once at the top, continue straight on along the hiking trail (hiking signs show the way). You stay on the path specially prepared for pedestrians by the snow groomers. During the hike you cross the ski slope and after about 1 ½ hours you reach the Edtalmhütte, with a very beautiful sun terrace. The unique panorama with the Dachstein glacier, the Gosaukamm and the Tennengebirge makes the hike an experience.

Rinnbergalmen in Russbach: Walking time approx. 3 hours
Past the municipal office, follow the road to the left to the Rinnbach bridge and along the Rinnbach on a wide, slightly uphill freight path up to the Rinnbergalm or Angerkaralm.

Franzlalm in Russbach: Walking time approx. 1,5 hours
From the “Gseng” stop, the path leads comfortably up to the Franzlalm and from a small hill you can enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains.

Bluntautal in Golling: Walking time approx. 2,5 hours
A winter circular hiking trail leads along romantic paths into the fairy-tale winter landscape of the Bluntau Valley at the foot of the high Göll.

Postalm circular hike: walking time approx. 2 hours
Starting from car park 1 (Lienbachhof) - Blonde Hut - towards Rosserhütte - a gentle slope up towards lift 3. Before you cross the downhill slope of lift 3, a winter hiking trail leads left up the slope towards the edge of the forest. From there the winter hiking trail accompanies the 15km cross-country ski trail in the direction of the track. Take a detour to the Wolfgangseeblick and then follow the trail again to the Wieslerhütten and the upper parking lot. The winter hiking trail (past lift 3) or the Postalmstrasse takes you back to the starting point at parking lot 1. (Detour to Thoralm possible)
